Coachella Has Rebuilt And Moved Its Famous Sahara Tent For 2024

Ahead of the festival’s 2024 edition this April, Coachella has shared new plans to both rebuild and move its famous Sahara Tent, a celebrated home for electronic acts and, more recently, rap and pop performances.

In a video posted to Instagram today, Jason Brown, Vice President of Artist Production for Coachella promoter Goldenvoice, shared that the new Sahara Tent will be located in a completely new area of Coachella’s Indio, California venue.

Brown explained that the process of moving the iconic stage began in December, with crews working through the night to lay new “underground footings”–totaling 1,500 tons of concrete–for a brand-new structure that stretches 320 feet long.

Rising up from the new Sahara Tent’s sturdy foundation will be an improved steel frame, differing from the old tent’s aluminum structure.

“There is so much more weight capacity that we can do. There are so much more production elements we can do,” Brown said. “So we’re going to be more than ready for an artist like Peggy Gou, who brings whatever she wants to bring to the show.”

This isn’t the first time the Sahara Tent has been moved. Its famous arched roof has been rebuilt at several different locations on festival grounds, including a spot on the site’s outer limits–near today’s Rose Garden VIP area–in the early 2000s, and its more recent centralized location, following a move in 2018.

Over the course of Coachella’s more than two-decade history, the Sahara Tent has welcomed groundbreaking performances from an array of dance music superstars.

Pioneering acts like Kevin Saunderson, A-Trak, Underworld and The Chemical Brothers took to the Sahara stage at Coachella’s inaugural edition in 1999; Modern EDM stars like Avicii, Skrillex and Calvin Harris played the Sahara throughout the 2010s; and the Sahara Tent even housed Daft Punk’s famous pyramid in 2006.

This year’s festival will feature more celebrated electronic acts, including Justice, Charlotte de Witte, Peggy Gou and more.
