125-Year-Old Ibizan Theater To Reopen As New Live Music Venue

After a lengthy 16-year restoration, Ibiza Town’s historic Teatro Pereyra will reopen as a new live music venue this May.

The 125-year-old colonial-style theater building will be relaunched as a “social and cultural hub of Ibiza,” comprising a state-of-the-art theater, live music venue, cocktail bar and lounge, according to a statement shared with Mixmag.

“We intend to revive the traditional spirit of the theatre, serving as a communal space for both locals and visitors to mingle, allowing people from all walks of life to connect and indulge in a rich array of cultural and leisure pursuits,” said venue owner Pedro Matutes Barceló.

Bareceló plans to host a year-round schedule of events at Teatro Pereyra, ranging from cinema and performing arts, to live music from Spain and abroad.

It remains to be seen if any of these acts will be DJs, but with the venue’s main Janet Lussman Theatre room housing hydraulic platforms, 256 movable seats and cutting-edge visual technology, the performance possibilities would appear to be endless.

These updated production elements will be managed by renowned Spanish musician and composer Nacho Cano, known for his musical work on Spain’s various Olympic bids and his collaborations with Hans Zimmer.

Before falling into disrepair roughly 30 years ago, Teatro Pereyra was revered as an important “cultural meeting place,” according to White Isle culture magazine Ibiza Style. More than a century on from its construction in 1899, the building has now been designated as a Cultural Heritage Site by the Ibizan government for its historic design and cultural significance.

Teatro Pereyra will continue top operate its Café Pereyra “eatery” during the day, before its music programming begins at night, offering views of the “best-preserved Renaissance wall in the Mediterranean.” It’s first-floor cocktail bar, Sala Sandoval and Compañia, will showcase the building’s French-Cuban-inspired design.
