Spanish Police Investigating Diplo for "Illegal" Party on Protected Ibiza Beach: Report

An "illegal" party organized by Diplo on the island of Ibiza has led to an investigation by Spanish police, IB3 reports.

Diplo on Monday performed for fans on the shores of the stunning Cala D'Hort, a protected nature reserve in Sant Josep de sa Talaia. Following his performance beside the small rocky island of Es Vedrà, videos of which were shared on social media, the City Council and Policía Local de Sant Josep announced an investigation into the event.

Diplo and any other organizers could face a fine of up to €300,000, per IB3.

The Ibiza Leisure Association released a statement condemning the party in the Ibizan cove, a "very sensitive area of the island" which is part of the European Environment Agency's protected areas network, Natura 2000. Diplo reportedly promoted the illicit party through his social media channels.

"The space where this event was held is a Protected Area by the European Union through the Natura 2000 Network, in addition to a Natural Area of Special Interest, among other figures of environmental protection," reads a press release issued by the Sant Josep City Council. "A vulnerable area in which this type of illegal activities promote the risk of fires, noise problems, waste, etc and, of course, endanger the integrity of the people attending."

The event has also drawn the ire of local environmental groups like Amics de la Terra, who took to social media to admonish the DJ.

The Sant Josep City Council and the town's mayor, Vicente Roig, are now investigating "possible crimes that may have been incurred in order to act accordingly."

It's unclear whether or not Diplo received authorization from local authorities to host the party and he has not been formally charged at the time of this writing.
