Barbara Lago: “True Classics Never Die”

Having established herself as one of techno's most exciting emerging selectors, we couldn’t help but wonder: What are Barbara Lago's Top Tracks? So, we asked her.

Barbara Lago has rapidly risen as one of the most exciting artists in Spain's thriving techno scene – a scene renowned for its difficulty to break into. Influenced early on by Detroit and European techno, Spain's identity was shaped by pioneers like Óscar Mulero, Cristian Varela, and Paco Osuna, who blended industrial and minimal sounds. Iconic venues like La Ruta del Bakalao paved the way for legendary clubs like Florida 135 and Fabrik, while festivals like Sónar propelled Spanish techno to the global stage.

Barbara’s style builds on this rich heritage, showcasing a diverse range of techno influences – from acid and industrial to hard techno and trance. Her sets are celebrated for their high energy, captivating groove, and dynamic storytelling. She’s also a core figure in the hugely popular Blackworks event concept, based in Madrid, known for its sold-out shows and fiercely loyal following.

Despite her packed touring schedule, we were lucky to catch up with her. And while her sound leans toward hard techno, her Top Tracks list is anything but predictable.

Barbara LagoWhat's the first record you ever bought? Alexander Kowalski - Speaker Attack

Alexander Kowalski has been a major inspiration for me as a DJ. I’ve always admired his work, and his track 'Speaker Attack' feels like it could be the soundtrack of my life.

The first time you remember hearing electronic music? Public Domain – Operation Blade

I first heard this track in the movie Blade. There’s a memorable scene where a party is in full swing, and suddenly, the fire sprinklers go off, spraying blood onto the dance floor.

I still play this track in 2024, and many people continue creating new versions. It’s a testament to its status as one of the greatest hits in electronic music - completely timeless.

    The guaranteed floor-filler?

Any 156 BPM edit of a classic...

The best tune from last year? Record Breaking -  XRTN, NYCO

This is the track I’ve played the most over the past year. So I think it’s only fitting to give it that title.

The guilty pleasure? Massano - The Feeling (ACOR HT Rework)

Personally, I often find myself playing this rework. I know I’m not the only one with this guilty pleasure, but I can’t resist playing it occasionally.

The last track of the night? Jones & Stephenson - The First Rebirth

A classic like this proves that true classics never die!!

The best chillout record? Paul Kalkbrenner - Sky and Sand

Although it’s not exactly my style, this track by Kalkbrenner takes you on a journey. It’s like travelling through sound rather than just listening to it.

The record everyone loves, but you hate?

I wouldn’t say there’s any track I truly hate. Some I like less than others, but none stand out. It’s much easier to list the ones I love!! :)

The soundtrack to a lazy Sunday afternoon? The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition

Right now, it's a lazy Sunday afternoon, and it’s playing.

The worst record you’ve ever heard?

I wouldn’t want to judge someone else’s work by calling it 'the worst I’ve ever heard.' I prefer to keep those opinions to myself. That said, I will admit that I’ve encountered some of the worst tracks I’ve ever heard this year.

    The record you're proudest of?

Currently, the records on my own EP - Emergency Control.

    The future classic?

I’d love to know the answer to that myself too! It might be a track from Marlon Hoffstadt - maybe? I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
