British DJ Imposes Fines For Requesting “Overplayed Songs”

Are DJs tired of partygoers constantly requesting overplayed songs and not accepting no for an answer? DJ Pressplay, the resident DJ at Coda in Colchester, has implemented a price list for “overplayed songs”. Specifically for people who “don’t take ‘no’ for an answer anymore” when requesting music. Colin Gingell-Good shared that he has introduced written signs on his DJ booth in an interview with The Daily Gazette.

The Coda resident DJ introduced this price list in his DJ booth since April 2022. Charges include £50 for birthday requisitions, £100 for “songs that don’t fit the night” and those who want their song “played next because [they’re] leaving”. Lastly £500 for “insisting you know better than the DJ”. He goes onto explaining “overplayed” hits get special price points. Some of the steepest pricing include £250 for Kings Of Leon’s ‘Sex On Fire’, £500 for Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’ and a whooping £1,000 for The Killers’ ‘Mr. Brightside’.

DJ PressPlay emphasizes that requests for good songs that fit the night and those people will enjoy the night free of charge. Gingell-Good stated that the price list acts as a “polite reminder“. It’s a lighthearted joke, which most people find amusing. It’s targeting people who insist on having their way and to avoid lengthy discussions about why he won’t play their songs.

In a bit of a tongue-in-cheek kind of joke, I’ve put this sign up. It’s more of a polite notice that if you’re going to come up and not take no for an answer – you won’t accept I’m not going to ruin the night just for you – then I’m going to pretend I’m going to charge you for it
