Beatport Launches Indie Tech Genre Category

Attack Mag - News - Feat Images Beatport Indie Tech

Beatport has launched indie tech, a standalone genre category with its own Top 100 chart, separating it from indie dance.

Beatport has added indie tech to its store as a standalone genre, giving the heavier, club-focused strand of contemporary indie dance its own page and chart.

The change separates two sounds that had shared a single Beatport category. Beatport says the decision followed outreach to artists and labels across indie dance and the wider electronic music community, who supported the split.

A peak-time sound with its own category

Beatport describes indie tech as built around punchy drums, prominent basslines and bold synth hooks, arranged for peak-time sets. It cites influences from tech house, melodic house & techno, bass house and mainstage.

Artists the company associates with the sound include Adam Ten, Mita Gami, Vintage Culture and Max Styler. It also names the labels Maccabi House, Stil vor Talent, Diynamic and Higher Ground.

The category has its own genre page, a Top 100 chart and a dedicated space for featured tracks and releases.

Why Beatport split Indie Dance

The same conversations with artists and labels informed a Beatportal feature, Left to Indie: Reclaiming the Spirit of Indie Dance, which traced the genre's roots in post-punk, disco and leftfield club music. According to Beatport, that process clarified the distinction between this tradition and the heavier, more polished material filed alongside it.

Raph Pujol, Beatport's VP of Global Curation, framed the move partly as a correction. ‘We don't always get everything right, and when we don't, it's important that we listen, learn and do right by the communities we serve,’ he said.

Pujol added that Beatport ‘felt a responsibility to protect that identity while still embracing where the music is heading’.

Electronic duo HIGHLITE, quoted in the announcement, said: ‘For us, having a dedicated category means giving this sound a clear identity and creating a space where artists and listeners can continue to push it forward.’

What it means for labels and DJs

Genre placement on Beatport has practical consequences. With a separate Top 100, indie tech releases are ranked against each other and not within the indie dance chart, which changes the field for artists and labels on both sides of the split. For DJs, the category gathers the sound in one place for browsing.

Beatport has reorganised its genre taxonomy before, including dividing techno into peak time/driving and raw/deep/hypnotic categories. The indie tech announcement does not say whether existing indie dance releases will be recategorised.

The indie tech genre page and chart are now live on Beatport.
