Attack - QnA - Feature Images KRL MRX

KRL MX has been released on Kobosil's R-Label and Amelie Lens' Exhale. These accomplishments have put him firmly on the radar, particularly those for a faster, harder style of techno. We put him through our Q&A.

Why music?

It’s a universal language that connects people across cultures and emotions.

If you weren't making music, what would you be doing?

Probably something creative like a designer or in the visual arts.

What's the best advice you’ve ever received?

Be consistent and try to improve your workflow.

KRL MXWhat inspires you?

I find much inspiration in museums, nature, other artists, and everyday experiences.

What's the next big thing?

Personalized music consumption and creation are the next big thing, and the fusion of AI and music production marks this. People will be able to listen to music that feels tailor-made for their tastes and moods, essentially hearing what they would dream.

Best club experience?

Playing at RSO on Robus Stage on Sunday evening.

What's the worst job you’ve ever had?

Working for a bank was monotonous and uninspiring.

How do you know when a track's finished?

It’s a never-ending process. So for me, the track is done when it evokes the intended emotion and nothing feels out of place.

What was your last day job and when did you realise you could give it up?

I was a business consultant, and I knew I could give it up after my first international tour.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Frank Ocean - Pyramids.

What's the easiest way to make it in the music industry?

There is no easy way, but consistency is key. For me, the most important thing is to try to do things in a smart way. Knowing how to question oneself and revisit one’s plan of action. Having a vision.

What's the worst track you've ever released?

AlI the tracks I put out early in my career.

Recommend us a film.

Good Morning England by Richard Curtis.

Recommend us a book.

Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike.

What or who is underrated?

All the talented artists are stuck in their rooms.

What or who is overrated?

Chocolate.

What are you addicted to?

What do you lust over?

Vintage 70s furniture.

What is your greatest regret?

Sometimes I regret not having dared to quit my job earlier. But then I tell myself that things would have been different. So, I take things as they are. I have no regrets.

What one thing would most improve your life?

I have found a very good life balance. However, I would like to have time to visit my family in the east of France.

What’s the worst gig you’ve ever played?

I can’t give you names, but there are common issues like poor organization, inadequate sound systems, no speakers in the booth, and incorrect running order.

Collaboration: rich creative experience or pain in the ass?

Pain in the ass.

What’s the secret to a great mix?

Being able to read the crowd, play with their frustration, and adapt your track selection to the environment and the running order. Don’t take it too seriously; it’s not only about art but also about having fun.

If you could only listen to one more track, what would it be?

Henri Salvador - Jardin d'Hiver.

How do you relax?

Sport, spending time outdoors or with friends.

What one piece of software/kit could you not do without? Why?

A secret Ableton rack I made for synths that adds an extra touch.

Art or money?

Both. It depends on why you create art and how you use your money.

Ronaldo or Messi?

Messi.

Strangest place you ever wrote a track?

In the Berghain restroom, I recorded a voice note of a melody that came to mind.

Must-visit record store?

Hard Wax Berlin and Techno Import Paris.

What's your single biggest frustration in the music industry?

The music industry can be highly political. Key industry players often have significant control over who gets promoted and who doesn’t.

What’s your favourite label? Why?

Ninja Tune, for their diverse and innovative roster.

What's the worst thing about making music?

The constant pressure to release new material.

What’s your motto?

Stay inspired and keep pushing boundaries.

Name something timeless

A great melody.

Tweet us a tip. What’s the best production advice you can give in 140 characters or less?

Always trust your ears over your eyes; if it sounds good, it is good.

Complete this sentence: At heart I'm just a frustrated ...

...perfectionist.

If someone saw a performance of yours in 1000years, what do you think they would they say?

The representation of different cultures, genders, and identities within the performance could show the efforts toward diversity and inclusion in the arts during this period.

Can music change the world?

Directly not. But music can change people individually. So…

What are you listening to right now?

Pachyman - Sunset Sound
