Surf Mesa Is About to Break the Internet Again

When a bedroom producer goes from uploading tracks online to scoring billions of streams, the EDM community takes notice. Surf Mesa is one of those rare artists whose meteoric rise caught everyone off guard and kept them dancing. His next big hit...

Manifest Audio Deliver 12 Potent New MIDI Tools In MIDI Toolset 003

Attack Mag - News - Feat Images MIDI Toolset 3

Manifest Audio’s MIDI Toolset 003 expands the creative options available in Live 12 with a powerful collection of four MIDI generators and eight transformations. Now available in the Attack Store.

    Generators: Building Complex Patterns
    Metagrid

Metagrid introduces a multi-grid approach, allowing new methods of polyrhythmic sequencing. Up to eight grids – covering parameters such as pitch, velocity, mute, and even timing – can run simultaneously, each with independent step lengths.

By setting different grid lengths and directions, it becomes possible to unfold polymetric patterns that evolve over long periods. A producer working on ambient music could easily set varying lengths for pitch, mute, and velocity grids, creating a constantly shifting melodic texture without manual note input, extended for hundreds of bars.

Metaloom uses a similar multi-lane structure but adds automatic randomization to a more familiar sequencing paradigm. Parameters such as pitch, chance, octave, and mute can evolve over time based on user-defined bar intervals, making it suitable for extended arrangements.

This could be suited for creating extended clips for live performance, where subtle variation helps sustain interest over long sets – or simply generate a full track length's sequence with all kinds of dynamic changes baked in.

Rematrix takes a probabilistic approach to beat juggling.

Two separate matrices control timing and pitch probabilities for up to four selected MIDI notes, generating new rhythmic and melodic variations from a small input. This is a practical way to reimagine a simple four-note drum pattern, turning it into something more unpredictable without losing its structure.

Looking for something a bit further out in creative space? Scantron transforms visual noise fractals into MIDI data. Users can scan through fractal noise patterns or manipulate image parameters such as hue and contrast, translating these into pitch and rhythm. This tool offers an unconventional source of inspiration, generating melodies and even chord progressions from complex visual noise.

The eight new transformation tools expand on MIDI editing workflows:

    • Monotizer reduces polyphonic material to single-note lines using algorithms such as lowest, highest, or random note extraction. This can be useful for creating basslines from chord progressions.
    • Multiswap and Paraswap introduce probabilistic pitch and parameter remapping, allowing selective variation in melody or note dynamics.
    • Quantographer creates tupletted grooves by dividing timing grids into irregular subdivisions, helping break away from standard quantization.
    • Refractor and Replacer are utilities for folding values within set ranges and remapping drum or note pitches.
    • Seeker adds an XY control surface for live manipulation of note properties, with interval-based randomization.
    Workflow Integration

A notable feature across all Manifest Audio devices is scale awareness and full Info View annotation, making them intuitive to integrate into existing sessions. By combining a generator with subsequent transformations, users can develop highly complex outputs far beyond what might be offered by any single tool or process.

Requires Live 12.2 Suite or higher running Max 9 or above on Mac or PC.
