London’s fabric Nightclub Eliminates All Single-Use Plastics

London’s world-famous nightclub, fabric, has now eliminated single-use plastics from the venue.

In an Instagram post shared on Friday, the dance music institution unveiled all-new, custom-designed water cans that are now available for purchase at each of its five bars.

“The cans are replacing the old water bottles and this change allows us to now eliminate single-use plastic at the club,” fabric wrote.

Italian multidisciplinary artist Luca Zamoc has designed the can’s fresh look. Zamoc has previously produced visual works and cover art for fabric’s Houndstooth record label.

The design will be showcased on fabric’s cans “for the next few seasons.” Moving forward, the legendary venue will hand-select artists to collaborate on future can designs. Fabric added that it will be opening artwork submissions soon.

In response to concerns over drink spiking and potential spillage in the absence of plastic screw-on caps, Fabric shared that the nightclub offers free reusable lids that fit over all of its glasses and cups. The venue also notably provides free tap water to all patrons, and reusable water bottles are encouraged.

Given nightlife’s close association with drinking and a continued emphasis on staying hydrated at electronic music events, the music industry’s fight against single-use plastics—which contain chemical additives that can disrupt human and wildlife ecosystems—has grown considerably in recent years.

BLOND:ISH and her non-profit Bye Bye Plastic enlisted completely reusable bioplastic cups made from bacteria during a showcase at last year’s Amsterdam Dance Event. Elsewhere, promoters like DGTL Amsterdam and Live Nation have pledged to remove single-use plastics from their events completely.
